Royce Battery Suite
The Royce Battery Suite launched on the 31st of October 2023, and is built on the £1million investment from the Sir Henry Royce Institute – UK’s National Materials Institute, SHRI Hub located in Manchester with UCam being one of the partners. Seminar by Prof. Zhao and Prof. Mai at MSM and IFM
We were glad to host Prof. Zhao from Imperial College London and Prof. Mai from Wuhan University of Technology to give a talk about their work Li-ion, Na-ion, and solid-state batteries, as well as on-chip electrochemical devices, and bioelectronics.
Prof. Zhao's seminar was titled "Electrochemical Energy Storage and Bioelectronic Devices: From On-chip Design to Flexible Integrated Systems" and Prof. Mai spoke about "Nanowire Energy Storage Materials and Devices".

Congratulations Dr. Sami for being awarded the RAEng Enterprise Fellowship
Dr. Ismail Sami was one of the 12 people awarded the Royal Academy of Engineering Enterprise Fellowship, which marks the start of a 12-month entrepreneurial journey with the Enterprise Hub. He was awarded it for Molyon, a company based around High-energy and long-life lithium-sulfur batteries.

It was nice to host Prof. Govind Gupta from CSIR-National Physical Laboratory (New Delhi, India) in the 2DMD Group. The visit was funded by the Royal Society International Exchange programme. We are collaborating with Prof. Gupta on integrating 2D materials with III-V semiconductors.

Seminar on "Optical properties of Optimally Synthesized 2D materials" by Prof. Akshay Singh
Delighted to have Prof. Akshay Singh from IISc Bangalore deliver a seminar on "Optical Properties of Optimally Synthesized 2D Materials". Prof. Singh spoke about the physical origin of low-energy peaks in differently prepared MoS2 monolayers with the interplay of strain, defects and oxygen, and discussed the concept of in-silico chemical vapour deposition, where the CVD system is modelled using fluid modelling of precursor concentration and temperature profiles.

Seminar by Professor Young Duck Kim
Glad to have Professor Young Duck Kim from Kyung Hee University give a talk on “Hexagonal boron nitride for quantum light emission and Moire remote doping”! Prof. Kim presented the deep ultraviolet (DUV) electroluminescence from hBN heterostructures and the creation of robust carbon color centers in hBN under an applied local electric field. Electrically induced carbon color centers in hBN play an important role in developing efficient solid-state DUV light sources and deterministic quantum emitters.

Activities included a the demonstration of a fruit battery, seeing how the world's thinnest material is made, and a chance for kids to assemble their own battery!

Professor Manish Chhowalla named Royal Academy of Engineering Chair
Congratulations to Professor Manish Chhowalla on being awarded one of the three Cambridge researchers who were four RAEng Chairs in Emerging Technologies, securing a 10-year long funding to support his work. Presentations at the LiSTAR Phase 2 Consortium
The Cambridge Battery team from Prof. Manish Chhowalla's group went down to London to attend the LiSTAR Phase 2 Consortium, which is phase 2 of 4 in a bid to bring Lithium-Sulfur Batteries to forefront of energy storage technology. Presentations were also given by our very own Dr. Jung-In Lee, and PhD students, Jeffrey Yang and Esther Gray.

Congrats Ismail for the EPSRC and Research Fellowship!
Ismail Sami completed his PhD in Feb 2023 and was awarded an EPSRC IAA commercialisation grant and Research Fellow at the Faraday Institution, LiSTAR project. From Jan 2024 he has been appointed as a Research Associate at E-Lab King's College Cambridge.
