Opening of the Royce Battery Suite and XPS Facility
November saw the opening of the new Royce Battery Suite and the XPS instrument in the Materials Science and Metallurgy Department. The suite provides equipment for academic and commercial researchers to manufacture and process new safer, efficient and long-lasting battery materials. The NEXSA G2 Thermo Scientific Surface Analysis System, a high performance X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, was also installed.

ERC Grant Awarded for Post-doc Ismail!
Researchers in Prof. Manish Chhowalla's group awarded ERC Proof of Concept Grant to demonstrate large-scale and high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries as a commercial potential. “This Proof of Concept will help us take the essential commercial and technical steps in bringing our innovation to market.” said Dr Ismail Sami a Research Fellow.

Awarded ERC Advanced Grant
Prof Chhowalla has been awarded the ERC Advanced Grant for his proposal on tunnel field effect transistors based on two dimensional semiconductors for high performance energy efficient electronics.
Title: Engineering low power tunnel transistors based on two-dimensional semiconductors (Acronym: 2D LOTTO). Funded to the tune of £2.3million by the Product & Engineering (PE8) Panel.
