2DMD participates in Cambridge Science Festival

We are delighted to have showcased interactive demonstrations and science activities to school children as a part of the Cambridge Science Festival 2024 in the Materials Science and Metallurgy Department. Activities included a the demonstration of a fruit battery, seeing how the world's thinnest material is made, and a chance for kids to assemble their own battery!

Professor Manish Chhowalla named Royal Academy of Engineering Chair

Congratulations to Professor Manish Chhowalla on being awarded one of four RAEng Chairs in Emerging Technologies, securing a 10-year long funding to support his work. Presentations at the LiSTAR Phase 2 Consortium

The Cambridge Battery team from Prof. Manish Chhowalla's group went down to London to attend the LiSTAR Phase 2 Consortium, which is phase 2 of 4 in a bid to bring Lithium-Sulfur Batteries to forefront of energy storage technology. Presentations were also given by our very own Dr. Jung-In Lee, and PhD students, Jeffrey Yang and Esther Gray.

Congrats Ismail for the EPSRC and Research Fellowship!

Ismail Sami completed his PhD in Feb 2023 and was awarded an EPSRC IAA commercialisation grant and Research Fellow at the Faraday Institution, LiSTAR project. From Jan 2024 he has been appointed as a Research Associate at E-Lab King's College Cambridge.

Congrats Ismail for winning first place at the Chris Abell Postdoc Business Plan Competition!

MoSTLi is co-founded by Dr Ismail Sami, Dr Zhuangnan Li and Professor Manish Chhowalla.

Opening of the Royce Battery Suite and XPS Facility

November saw the opening of the new Royce Battery Suite and the XPS instrument in the Materials Science and Metallurgy Department. The suite provides equipment for academic and commercial researchers to manufacture and process new safer, efficient and long-lasting battery materials. The NEXSA G2 Thermo Scientific Surface Analysis System, a high performance X-ray photoelectron spectrometer, was also installed.

ERC Grant Awarded for Post-doc Ismail!

Researchers in Prof. Manish Chhowalla's group awarded ERC Proof of Concept Grant to demonstrate large-scale and high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries as a commercial potential. “This Proof of Concept will help us take the essential commercial and technical steps in bringing our innovation to market.” said Dr Ismail Sami a Research Fellow.

Awarded ERC Advanced Grant

 

Prof Chhowalla has been awarded the ERC Advanced Grant for his proposal on tunnel field effect transistors based on two dimensional semiconductors for high performance energy efficient electronics.

Title: Engineering low power tunnel transistors based on two-dimensional semiconductors (Acronym: 2D LOTTO). Funded to the tune of £2.3million by the Product & Engineering (PE8) Panel.
